Swing IV: Intro to Aerials — First Flips!Learn to do the fun flips! This aerials class is for dancers who are beginners to the type of aerials that involve the flier/follower turning upside down. We'll be focusing on two aerials that experience has shown are great firsts for learning aerials safely and successfully: the Knicker Bocker and the Pancake. This isn't a class for beginners to swing dancing, though, and we expect that you've done our basic aerials (ie. jumps and lifts) from Swing I/II and ideally III.
Pre-requisites: Partner Required. Both dancers should have taken Swing I/II (or equivalent experience), and ideally Swing III. You'll need to be comfortable with swingouts, tuck turns and underarm turns, as well as jumps such as the frog jump. You'll also need to be fit enough to do the jumping and/or lifting that your role requires, with your partner. Your success in doing the aerials will be partly dependent on the leader/base being strong enough to easily lift the follower/flier, and the follower/flier will need the leg and core strength to do jumping and tucking motions effectively. You are responsible for checking with a doctor to ensure you're physically ready for acrobatics.
We take aerials safety very seriously. Teachers reserve the right to limit or stop students' participation at any time in order to ensure safety. Students will be expected to pay close attention, and not try things before the teachers indicate both partners are ready. While aerials always have an element of risk of personal injury, both to the flier and to the base, learning proper technique under the supervision of experienced aerials instructors will greatly decrease the risk of injury so that you can focus on the FUN!
Can't find a partner? Maybe we can help! First try posting on the Swing Dynamite Facebook page, or finding potential partners at Saturday Night Swing. $90 for 4 weeks, or $60 for students & seniors.
