New York Hustle

What is the Hustle?

There were a number of dance styles called Hustle in the Disco era; however only one Hustle partner dance has survived to remain popular in both ballrooms and nightclubs in North America. This style is often referred to as New York Hustle.

Hustle is a dance known for its extravagant, exuberant sense of style, and for its use of multiple free spins for the lady. It began as a hybrid of styles such as mambo and swing, danced to disco music. Referenced in the movie Saturday Night Fever, it became a popular partner dance.

Hustle today

Today, Hustle is a very popular dance worldwide, done to contemporary and retro music. Dancers of both West Coast Swing and Salsa enjoy integrating Hustle into their dance repertoire.

All Ages

Hustle is also popular with a wide range of ages, from dancers in their 20's to dancers in their 70's! Dancers enjoy Hustle because of its eye-catching flair, and it's a nice way to dance to modern beats at tempos that are a bit fast for WCS.

Double Trouble nights at Saturday Night Swing!

We feature "Double Trouble" nights about every two weeks at Saturday Night Swing, where we have two rooms running with separate DJs and dance floors: one room for West Coast Swing/Hustle, and the other for vintage swing dances such as Lindy Hop. Many West Coast Swing dancers enjoy either dancing the Hustle, or dancing WCS to Hustle music, so you'll have a lot of opportunities to practice your Hustle! Check out Saturday Night Swing for more information!

Westie Bomb

If you're interested in Hustle, check out our Ottawa WCS event, the Westie Bomb, which often features Hustle! We'll also be featuring some Hustle classes and workshops!
